In the European Foundry Industry Sentiment Index (FISI) a cautiously stabilizing outlook has been noted for the month of February.

Published monthly by the European Foundry Federation (EFF), the Index retained the same level as the previous month with a value of 95.5 points.

Despite this seeming stabilization in February, the further outlook for the European Foundry Industry remains fragile.

According to the FISI, the entire sector shows a mixed picture of some improvements who are contrasted by several segments with weakening expectations as near-term prospects remain uncertain.

The steel casting segment shows a significant increase and a more positive momentum, with expectations rising by 11 points up to 100.2, signalling a cautious optimism regarding the recovery of this sector.

However, when it comes to outstanding performances, the non-ferrous foundries continue to take the lead in regard to current activity levels. Their current situation index rose by 0.4 points and has now reached 130.9. There might still be some trouble ahead, as the expectations for this sector dropped notably by 2.2 points to 144.9.

As of now, the FISI remains below its long-term benchmark, a clear sign of a sector still struggling with several challenges and demonstrating the delicate balance the European foundry industry is in at the moment.

Supportive policy frameworks, investment in innovation, workforce skills and energy efficiency are key aspect to tackle these challenges, according to the EFF.
