Stainless Magnesium Tech: From Alloy Innovation to Thixomolding
As the demand for lightweight solutions in the industrial sector becomes increasingly urgent, magnesium alloy, as an important light metal structural material, is reaching a strategic turning point for large-scale application. However, traditional magnesium alloys have long faced two major bottlenecks: first, "insufficient corrosion resistance," which limits their service life in harsh environments; and second, "unstable forming processes," which restricts the yield and production efficiency of complex, large-scale components. Overcoming these two technical barriers and connecting the key links from material development to engineering application has become a core challenge in advancing the magnesium alloy industry.
The 21st China Die Casting Congress is honored to invite Mr. Zeng Xiaoqin, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Jiao Tong University Committee, Vice President of the university, and Professor, to deliver a keynote speech titled "Stainless Magnesium Technology: Research and Development Innovation from Alloy Materials to Thixomolding Processing".
As a leading scholar in the field of magnesium alloy research in China, Professor Zeng Xiaoqin will, based on his team's latest research achievements, systematically elaborate on how to solve the application bottlenecks of magnesium alloys through the dual pathways of material innovation and process optimization, bringing the industry a full-chain technological solution from source innovation to component manufacturing.

Professor and doctoral supervisor at Shanghai Jiaotong University. Currently serving as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of SJTU, Director of the Shanghai Magnesium Materials and Applied Engineering Technology Research Center, Director of the Chinese Materials Research Society. Main research directions: Material genetic engineering and advanced magnesium alloy design and processing. Owner of National Technological Invention Award and National Scientific and Technological Progress Award.
Brief Abstract of the Presentation
Firstly, the report highlights the team's theoretical breakthroughs and practical achievements in stainless magnesium alloys, significantly enhancing the corrosion resistance of the materials. Then, in terms of process, the report deeply analyzes the characteristics and development history of thixomolding technology, studies the mechanism of structure-property correlation, develops semi-solid alloys with excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance, and successfully prepares "world's first" large-scale components such as multi-in-one electric drive housings and 20-inch wheels. Looking ahead, the stainless magnesium series technologies will jointly promote the leapfrog development of magnesium alloys in large-scale applications.

Also organized by the Foundry Institution of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (FICMES), CHINA DIECASTING & CHINA NONFERROUS expo 2026, will be held from July 15 to 17, 2026 at Shanghai New International Expo Centre (Halls N1–N4). As Asia's largest specialized exhibition for die casting and nonferrous foundry, this edition, under the theme "Twin Engines: Al & Mg, A Lightweight Future," is expected to span 49,200 square meters, attract over 600 exhibitors, and welcome 28,000 professional visitors. Colleagues from around the world are warmly invited to visit and exchange insights.
The previous edition of CHINA DIECESTING attracted 585 renowned exhibitor brands and 24,832 professional visitors for business exchanges. Among them, over a hundred enterprises representing the magnesium alloy industry chain were present, including LK, Waffer, KaShui, EON, Baowu Magnesium, JSW, Yizumi, Haitian, Frech, and BOLE. The exhibition comprehensively covered mainstream magnesium alloy casting processes, such as high-pressure die casting and rheocasting, as well as the entire industrial chain from raw materials, equipment, and molds to foundries, making it one of the most attention-grabbing highlights on site. The 2026 exhibition will further expand this focus, with Hall N4 serving as the core theme pavilion. Centered around the magnesium alloy theme, it will feature special events including the "Magnesium Alloy Casting Central Display Area," the "Magnesium Casting Cutting-edge Solution Zone," the "Magnesium Castings Award and Ceremony," the "Expert-led Tech Tour - Magnesium Casting Line," and the "Magnesium Castings Supply-Demand Matchmaking Meeting."
