Key Technologies for Semi-Solid Magnesium Alloys and Development of Lightweight Products
With the continuous advancement of automotive lightweighting and the vigorous development of the new energy vehicle industry, magnesium alloy, as one of the light metal materials with the greatest weight reduction potential, is ushering in unprecedented application opportunities. Leveraging China's abundant magnesium resources, excellent specific strength and stiffness, and the strong support of national policies under the "dual carbon" goals, magnesium alloy prices have gradually stabilized in recent years, removing cost barriers for its large-scale application in the automotive sector. Currently, domestic automotive companies are actively engaged in the R&D of magnesium alloy components, with products such as transmission housings, brackets, and steering wheel skeletons having already achieved mass production. However, how to further break through the bottlenecks of magnesium alloy forming processes and improve product mechanical properties as well as the green level of the manufacturing process remains a key direction for industry exploration. Magnesium alloy semi-solid injection molding technology combines the advantages of both injection molding and die casting. Not only does it produce castings with dense structure and superior performance, but it also completely eliminates the need for SF₆ protective gas, demonstrating broad application prospects.

She is mainly responsible for the development of high-performance magnesium alloy materials and casting technology. She has developed: 1) high-strength and high-toughness magnesium alloys, with T6-state properties of tensile strength ≥ 280 MPa, yield strength ≥ 240 MPa, and elongation ≥ 8%, and has applied the alloys in squeeze-cast steering knuckle products; 2) high heat-resistant magnesium alloys with creep resistance over 50% superior to AZ91D at 150°C/50MPa, used in die-cast e-drive housings; and 3) a semi-solid molded magnesium alloy chain case lower cover that has passed all bench tests.

This presentation will cover the the advantages of magnesium alloys and their application trends in automotive products, and case studies on the development of magnesium alloy semi-solid products.Domestic automobile companies are very active in the research and development of magnesium alloy products, and some applications such as magnesium alloy transmission housings, brackets, and steering wheel frames have already emerged. Magnesium alloy semi-solid injection molding technology is a new type of component manufacturing technology that combines features of injection molding and die casting, with broad application prospects.

The previous edition of CHINA DIECESTING attracted 585 renowned exhibitor brands and 24,832 professional visitors for business exchanges. Among them, over a hundred enterprises representing the magnesium alloy industry chain were present, including LK, Waffer, KaShui, EON, Baowu Magnesium, JSW, Yizumi, Haitian, Frech, and BOLE. The exhibition comprehensively covered mainstream magnesium alloy casting processes, such as high-pressure die casting and rheocasting, as well as the entire industrial chain from raw materials, equipment, and molds to foundries, making it one of the most attention-grabbing highlights on site. The 2026 exhibition will further expand this focus, with Hall N4 serving as the core theme pavilion.
